The Perils of Web Hosting on Search Engine Placements

Yes indeed, who would have thought it, but your web hosting provider could indirectly be costing you the chance of good placements in the major search engine Google.

How can this be? Well the problem is the physical location of the hosting centre itself. Now, while you may feel you have signed up with a UK hosting company, actually all their hosting centres can be in a different country such as the US or Germany for example.

Now this little quirk doesn't really have many side effects as you may well be getting very good value and good technical support from your host, but what it does mean is that if you do not have a geography specific domain suffix such as .co.uk for the UK and instead you opt for a .org, .net, or .com then Google will use the geographical location of your hosting centre as the method for determining which local index your results should be found in.

By this I mean if you were to search www.google.co.uk with the radio button switched to UK results only, and your .com site was hosted by a UK hosting supplier but in a German datacentre, then you would never appear in the search results. Of course, you would appear in the www.google.de search results, but obviously not many German google users are looking for websites and businesses in English or relevant only to a UK audience.

There are plenty of studies out there suggesting search patterns on Google that say it is approximately 50 : 50 as to the number of people that click the "all the web" results on google.co.uk compared to searching only UK results. However, I personally do not believe this, if I am looking for a business where a product needs to be delivered or a service provided to me that involves phone or person to person support and contact, am I really going to search every website on the Internet? No, I am only going to search across UK specific sites, and if I can't find what I want then I will expand my search to include sites outside the UK.

It is unknown to me at this time whether a .co.uk site hosted outside the UK suffers any form of penalisation from Google in its ranking placements in the google.co.uk index, and is quite difficult to prove either way as search engines are notorious for providing as little information as possible as to how they operate.

Unfortunately there is no real way around this problem if you are already caught up in it other than move your hosting to an ISP that is actually based in the Country that they claim to be on all advertising etc. Always check beforehand if you are looking at a non .co.uk domain name for your site, as you do risk never getting the 100's or 1000's of search engine referrals that www.google.co.uk can provide you.
Tip! Disk Space/Storage refers to the amount of space given by a web hosting plan for your web site's pages, images, and any additional files. Take this into consideration when determining the total number of files you will be using for your website and their sizes.

Below is a link to a tool that is useful for telling you the geographical location of your website, make sure you check it out if you are concerned about your site not being included in your local Google index, because there is nothing your hosting provider or Google can or will do about this situation, so get educated and make sure your website gets seen in your local Google index.

Tools for locating where your website is hosted (http://www.dnsstuff.com/)

Instructions

1) Using the "Ping" tool, type in your domain name and you will be given the IP address of the machine your site is hosted on.
Tip! Cost is very important. You want to find a web hosting plan that fits into your budget and not sacrifice your disk space and data transfer.

2) Copy and paste that IP address into the "tracert" tool, the final hop is the physical location of your website, so check this against the "Country" information on the right-hand side.

I don't see this problem changing or easing any time in the near future, as the service provided by Google for geographical indexed is fundamentally sound and they have to use some method of discerning which Country group a site is relative to when it has a non-geographical domain suffix, however more and more people are being caught out by this without even realising it, because they believed they were signing up to a hosting provider in their own Country.

I hope this article helps, and please email me any of your stories / problems in this area. Good luck!

Affordable Web Design And Hosting Services

For your business web site to remain attractive to your clients and potential customers, you need to update it regularly. You may even need a professional look for your web site. However, given the demands that you face in running a business, you may not be able to devote a sufficient amount of time to updating your web site content. Fortunately, you can get the help you need in building—and even updating—a website in no time. This option involves using a web site builder, which is a web-based application that can allow you to build professional-looking web sites in a short period of time.

How to use web site builders

With recent developments in web site builder software, you need not know how to use HTML to create a web site. Using this software will only involve following simple instructions. These instructions are provided in real-time, which allows you to build a website in matter of a few hours. There are also thousands of templates that you can choose from as you build your site. This eliminates the need for you to learn new technical skills because these applications have been designed to be very user-friendly.

Cost

Most web site builder application packages come with web hosting. This is a good deal because it not only provides you with a cheaper way to put up a website, but you are also assured that the web site you are building is compatible with the host that you will use. The average cost of these packages is about $5 a month, inclusive of technical support. However, if you wish to add e-commerce capabilities to your web site such as credit card payments processing, you may need to pay about $10 a month for both the use of the web site builder and hosting services.

An affordable way to build or update a website is to use a web site builder application, which usually comes with web hosting services. Web site builders can help you build and put up a web site in a short period of time because they have been designed to be user-friendly. Hosting capability adds more convenience to the process.

Web Design and Hosting for South Africa

Like most of us when coming home we scroll thru the mail and have a look at all the specials. Or is that the way it used to work? Market research has shown that more and more people surf the net for what they are looking for. Here is a few quotes I found on whiles investigating this.

"More and more people are turning to the internet as their preferred source for news, research and business transactions. Traditional advertising is simply not enough if you want to capture the attention of today's modern audience."

". If you are not advertising on the internet today, you are losing a large percentage of the audience you may have reached a couple of years ago."

With this in mind we also did some market research on owning a Web site and the pricing. This is obviously the best way of advertising on the World Wide Web.

You must be determent to get your small to medium company on the World Wide Web. It would be best if you shop arournd and get the best Web design company to do this for you. You must also make sure that you dont pay to much for Domain registration and maintance.

Web Design With Free Hosting

Are you looking at lowering your annual hosting costs? Are you fed up with having to pay hosting fees? Are you unsure which company to use to host your new website? These are questions that many people would answer yes to. I myself have a large number of websites and the cost of hosting them all, does at times annoy me. In this article I look at alternative options that I have recently heard about which could be the answer to some of these hosting cost frustrations.

The popularity and demand of web designers has never been greater. More and more people are looking into the benefits of having their own website/s. This could of course be used to promote their own business and to even sell their products online. It could just be a site to promote their sports/social club or just a website about their family. A growing number of people are looking to make money on the internet by selling advertising space on their site, this could be in the form of a program like google adsense or some other form of adverts. As you can see lots of people want an online prescence for lots of different reasons and web designers have never had it so good.

All of these people once they have had their site built then need to find a company to host it for them. This area can seem like a minefield with so many different options. Should you just simply go for the cheapest price? What is the difference between all of the companies? Should I stick with a UK company or should I go with a US company? Most people find all of this hosting business quite confusing and quite a pain. What people need is a simple solution.

A few months ago I heard about a company who was combining web design and web hosting under one type of umbrella. They basically stated that they would be a happy to build a site for so much money and would host if for you for free. This is a great idea and the price they quoted was very reasonable. I looked at their portfolio and was very impressed, I will be recommending them to many people in the future.

This is what could be the future of web design and web hosting. It certainly would make it a lot easier for the average man on the street.

Google Offers FREE Web Editor, Site and Hosting

Are you aware that Google quietly slipped into the web design and hosting business as well?

I discovered it myself only a few months ago almost by mistake, while playing around with my Gmail account's settings.

If you have a Gmail account, type "http://pages.google.com" into your URL window and hit return to go directly to Google's web-site building (called GOOGLE PAGES) interface.

After you log in by using your regular Gmail User ID and Password, you are ready to construct your web site.

Google really made it "fool proof" to make sure everybody will be able to have a web site without any excuses.

You can select from one of the available dozen or so templates to come up with a fairly decent web site within 15 minutes at ZERO cost.

Once you create your main "Index" page, the rest is about creating additional pages and linking them to one another in any way you want.

I recommend you select at least a 2-Column template to use your second column as a navigation side bar (where you would have your text links to other pages, including the all important HOME link).

You can import IMAGES as well very easily and configure both the alignment of the images (click and drag) and their size (small, medium, large).

Here is a valuable HINT that might save you a lot of grief:

When you create a new page, do NOT use a QUESTION MARK in the file name. For some odd reason such pages cannot be linked and they gave a 404 error message (page not found) when you try to bring them up in the browser.

Instead, create your pages with file names that do not include a question mark, immediately publish them as is with no content, then go back to the same page and (if you want) write a HEADLINE that does include a question mark.

Here are the GOOD POINTS of Google Pages:

1) It is FREE.

2) You can use over a dozen free templates to construct your web site within MINUTES.

3) The web editor interface does not allow you to do too many things but it is very simple to use and the Header choices provided will satisfy a majority of web users.
Tip! Data Transfer is the monthly amount of outward-bound non-email traffic from your web site, that is allowed by a web hosting plan. Each time a visitor views one of your pages, all the files used to generate the page are calculated into your data transfer.

4) It is very easy to UPDATE, EDIT and PUBLISH your existing pages.

And here are the NOT SO GREAT aspects of Google Pages:

1) You cannot mess around with the source code. Google has locked it out. Therefore you cannot insert any Javascript, or you cannot have a numerator, etc.

2) For the same reason, you cannot use Google pages for e-commerce either.

3) You have to start off with a domain name that is always a subset of the googlepages.com, as in "mysite.googlepages.com". However, you can POINT your own domain name to this site.

If you need a relatively static website on a FREE and well-maintained server with a FREE and very easy to use foolproof editor, then you should check out what Google has to offer.
Tip! Cost is very important. You want to find a web hosting plan that fits into your budget and not sacrifice your disk space and data transfer.

I have a feeling Google will not stop with this basic version and will continue to add new features as we go along. It's worth keeping an eye on this new experiment from Google.

Web Design, Hosting & SEO-Facts You Cannot Afford Not to Know

For every $1 that is being bought online today, there is going to be over $1100 spent. BUT for every business online making that money today there will be over 16000 businesses trying to get that extra $1100 by the year 2008! Does it not make sense to have a decent Website designed that does show up in Search engines? Now, no matter how pretty your design skills look, the art is to get Traffic to your website. Any website is only as good as its ability to show up and be found when searched for. Fact is there are millions of clients looking for your services on the internet by the minute, which could become yours. Have you ever listened to a sales person trying to convince a client that they need the product he is selling? Does it not make sense to strike while the iron is hot and actually spend your cents on Web design and Search Engine Optimization? These are clients already in need of your product, they need no convincing!

Web designers familiar with SEO strategies can design sites that are optimized for Search engines such as Google and Yahoo. Search Engines work on ranking, the higher your page rank, the better your chances are to get to the top of the Search engines. Truth is, when the major Search Engines give you a good ranking, your ranking in the smaller local search engines would automatically be better. Spending on SEO services make sense and there are good reasons for this. The first is that Search Engines are an online business portal for buyers & sellers and this is where businesses have to show up to get traffic that potentially turn into clients. All the stats will show you that those who spend the most on SEO get best returns on that investment. That seems like stating the obvious, but you really need to think a little about search engine results.
Tip! Support is really important when choosing a web hosting plan. You should check to see if the web host offers '24 hours a day / 7 days a week' support whether by phone, chat or email.

The top 10 ranking sites normally get all the traffic, so unless your marketing expenditure can get you into those top rankings, the performance of your web site and your company will not be promising. SEO will allow your product & services to be found where it is demanded and you would be far more successful, knowing your web site is a powerful 24/7 salesperson, like you intended when you spent the good money for it.

The other very important aspect of a successful web site would be the host behind it. Would you be able to once your powerful web site is up and running, be without it for several hours per week? Your new website is a powerful database driven website where your sales team gets critical updates and sales leads. How much downtime can you afford?

Cheap web hosting is not always a feasible choice. Determine your needs prior to paying a hosting company for inferior service. The purpose of your website is the determining factor when choosing a web host. Would your company ever sell anything online? Would you ever need a dynamic website where you can build up a database of clients that you could always revisit and market your products to? These are very simple but effective ways to determine who to choose as a hosting company. Should you ever need scripts and databases installed, would the host you choose be able to provide this? Should they honestly be able to provide the database hosting and be able to give you the technical support, what would they charge you? Astonishingly I have personally come across little static web sites where the owners are paying double the money that is charged for big dynamic web sites! Are you still not worried who is behind your website? I would be.
Tip! Disk Space/Storage refers to the amount of space given by a web hosting plan for your web site's pages, images, and any additional files. Take this into consideration when determining the total number of files you will be using for your website and their sizes.

Discover the 3 Most Important Things You Need To Know When Choosing eCommerce Web Hosting

eCommerce is one of the fasted growing segments of the internet. More and more people are started to buy online, with the value of their purchases getting higher and higher. If you're thinking about setting up your own eCommerce web site, here are the 3 more important things to consider.

Secure Sockets Layer (SSL)

If you're going to be accepting credit cards as payment on your site, you need to have a secure connection. This type of connection encrypts your customer's sensitive data so it can't be intercepted and stolen as it travels across the internet.

If you don't have a secure connection (which is indicated by https: at the beginning of your web address, instead of just http:) your customers won't be confident enough in your security to give your their personal information.

To get a secure connection, you need to apply for what is known as an SSL certificate. These certificates are issued by companies such as Thawte and Verisign, which require information about you and your location that they can physically verify.

Once you get this certificate, it gets installed on your web site. This lets your customers know that the issuing company has verified who you say you are, and is guaranteeing that information.

Third-Party Gateways

If the whole SSL certificate process sounds too complicated another option is to use a third-party gateway, which is basically another company that handles the financial transaction on your behalf.

When your customers are checking out on your website, they get redirected to the gateway's site where they provide their credit card details. This information is never given to you so your customers can be confident their sensitive information is safe.

Most of these third-party gateways will charge a transaction fee and possibly an initial setup fee for you to use their service. These fees vary, so it's worth comparing them to see who offer the best deal.

Shopping Carts

A shopping cart is a script - or piece of software - that gets installed on your website. It will help to automate the whole buying process for your customer.

Shopping carts will help to organize your products into categories, track returning customers, suggest upsell items and helpful accessories for purchases and may even offer a review system for your customers to post feedback on their purchases.

A shopping cart will improve your customer's experience as well as create a more structured layout for your site. There are many different carts available, many of which are free.

When you're choosing shopping cart software, be sure to check whether it is compatible with your chosen payment gateway or merchant account provider.

Web Hosting: The Most Important Aspect of Your Internet Business

Finally decided on something to base your business on and ready to start building the web pages? Getting through the first aspects of starting you internet business can be a struggle. Getting all your ideas into an organized layout etc etc. Well now that you have all your ideas organized what to do next?

The most important thing you will need to have for a successful internet business is what type of web hosting you will choose to host your web pages.

Why?

Well for one, your web host will have all your html pages, all graphics, scripts etc. What happens when your host goes offline? Does your website stay up or go down? It goes down. When your website goes down, you lose customers, no sales during the downtime meaning a loss of potential income.

Take time to find a good host that will suffice every aspect of your business. Do some research and ask some questions.

If you are looking for a shared hosting solution, find out if the host is overselling its servers. Overselling is when a company packs too many customers on one server, putting strain on the server resources. Shared hosting is not recommended for business type sites that need performance for its users, but it will suffice a business just starting out.

Another type of hosting solution is a dedicated server. A dedicated server is a server dedicated to only you. It is the most expensive out of hosting solutions, but will provide the most stable environment. No one else has an account on the server, so all server resources are for you. A managed dedicated solution is when your host will install operating systems, upgrades to software, or security fixes for you. You can call them any time to fix a problem because that's what you pay for.
Tip! Windows and Linux hosting at comparable prices. Some hosting companies will offer both Linux and Windows web hosting but some will charge much more for one or the other.

A step below a fully dedicated server is what is called a VPS or Virtual Private Server. A VPS is almost like a dedicated server but the physical server will have a few other users on it. You still have full control over your section of the server, you can install anything you want or upgrade. The server resources are shared among users, but many web hosts guarantee you a fixed amount of resources dedicated to your account.

If not wanting to shell out a pretty big check on web hosting for a starting business, I would recommend at least starting out with a virtual private server. Once you outgrow the VPS you can move onto a dedicated server of your own.
Tip! Cost is very important. You want to find a web hosting plan that fits into your budget and not sacrifice your disk space and data transfer.

Before signing up to any web host, do some research! Find several hosts that have what you are looking for and search for reviews, your internet business depends on it. Cheaper is not always better at least in webhosting!

Cost Effective and Powerful Dynamic Websites w. Fantastico Web Hosting

If you are developing your website on a host that charges less that $5 a month, make plenty of backups as you are likely to loose your website files when the webhost goes out of business without notice. Indeed, be extremely wary of any such host. Once your website is attracting getting visitors, get your website hosted with host that does not foolishly try to over sell his server resources. And, expect to pay at least $15 a month or more for the added security and reliability of such a host.

I highly recomend you look for a host that has the latest version of cpanel and fantastico installed. Fantastico is one of the greatest tools for web developers that I have seen in a long time. I can remember the time when installing a script meant that you had to spend an hour or two setting various parameters and permisions in different files everytime you wanted to add a guestbook or shoppping cart to your website. With Fanstastico you have numerous of the latest open source scripts like mambo ( content management ), coppermine( image gallery ), oscommerce ( shopping cart ), phpauction ( ebay style auction ) , and more all just clicks away. All you do is spend a few seconds telling Fantastico the directory that you want the script installed, the admin password, and you're done. This may not seem that exciting to you if you've never spent hours trying to install a script only to find that there was one little line somewhere that was causing the whole thing to fail. What I'm trying to say is that there has never been a more exciting time to create a website of the most stunning quality even if you know nothing about HTML, PHP, or CSS. Look for a web host with Fantastico.

Even if you don't want to do anything behind the scenes and you have hired a webmaster to work for you, ask him if he would rather work with a host that has Fantastico. There is nothing more stupid in my opinion than to pay a webmaster tens of thousands of dollars to create a website for you that ends up looking and functioning just like a website that has an open source solution. You've just ended up paying to recreate the wheel. Even if you think that you have a new and unique idea for a website, it may only require a modification of a Fantastico script. And, in this may mean an 12 hour job from a webmaster rather than an 12 month job.
Tip! 24/7 live support. Phone support is the best option but it is a bonus to find a web hosting company that provides 24/7 live chat support along with phone support.

There are a few Fantastico scripts in particular that I have found to be outstanding. One is Mambo. Mambo is a content management script. What is a content management script you ask? Well, it's a script that has an admin interface that you can open with your web browser to do everything from create links to more advanced features like managing articles, blogs, news, and link directories. It's much more simple than to use Mambo than it is to use an expensive wyswig editor like Dreamweaver or Frontpage. You don't even need to know the basics of HTML to run a complex happening website with Mambo working for you behind the scenes. Even if you don't understand the most simple HTML code like a href=... or table rowspan=... you can create a website with Mambo that looks and functions as good or better than the majority of websites out there. For a demonstation of what Mambo looks like please visit GB Web Hosting.

Another script in particular that I like is Open Realty. Open realty can create a website for realtors who wish to list their featured properties online. It has a full admin interface where they can add accounts for all the realtors in their office to add ,edit, and delete their featured property listings. They just fill out the fields that are most commonly used in real estate listings like address, city, square feet, bedrooms, bathrooms, etc and add the rest in a "full details" box. They hit submit and instantly the property appears on the website formated and looking sharp with pictures and captions neatly displayed below. If you are a realtor and are looking for a property listing website make sure your web host uses Fantastico with Open Realty ready to be installed with next to no effort.
Tip! Disk Space/Storage refers to the amount of space given by a web hosting plan for your web site's pages, images, and any additional files. Take this into consideration when determining the total number of files you will be using for your website and their sizes.

It amazes me that more website owners are not catching on and taking advantage of this awesome tool called Fantastico. It has got to be one of the greatest things since sliced bread. Get a web hosting account with Fantastico and you can be sure that you have everything that you need. It's that simple.

Are You Overlooking the Benefits of Using Sub-Domains within Your Web-hosting account?

One of the most useful features offered by some web hosting companies, is the option of creating sub-domains in the same web hosting account. The problem is, most website owners are not aware of why and how to create sub-domains.

A sub-domain is a web address pointing to a sub directory within the main website directory. The website consists of files organized in directories and and sub-directories.

A directory in a website is a folder in the web hosting account. The main website files reside in a folder called the /WWW folder, and this is accessed when someone types the URL which is the domain with a http://www in the beginning This where the home page of the website and other pages, like contact us, reside.

Suppose that you start expanding your website from couple pages to tens or more, and you want to add to your website different categories of information, how would you organize the information?. For example, if your website is used for business reasons, and you have to add sales, inventory, and other department information,

This is when sub-domains come into play. They serve to organize your web pages in different directories in order to make the website maintenance mush easier. Imagine you have hundred web pages in your website placed in the /www directory, this means every time you want to edit a webpage, you have to go through the hundred web pages.

Here is the solution to this problem:
Tip! Windows and Linux hosting at comparable prices. Some hosting companies will offer both Linux and Windows web hosting but some will charge much more for one or the other.

You create directories within the main directory with the names implying what they represent. So, you create a sales, inventory, news and other directories in the /www directory Then you add all sales web pages in the /www/sales directory, and the other web pages to the directories where they belong.

After organizing the web pages within sub-directories, someone in the sales department will be able to type the URL addrerss sales.company.com, and will be transferred the the sales sub-directory of the main website. Notice, that you don't have to use the www in the beginning of he address.

Another important benefits of the sub-domains is the ability to create many websites within one web hosting account. After creating sub-domains, you buy separate domains and point them to a specific sub-directory.

For example, the sub-domain sales.company.com can have a totally independent domain from company.com. You can purchase a domain, like www.companysales.com pointing to the same sub-directory.

In summary, if you aren't using sub-domains, you will not be able to expand your website easily beyond 30 pages. also, you will not be able to take advantage of the web server storage you get with your web-hosting account. Today, you can easily get a 500 MB. storage. If you have few pages only, you might be using 5-20 MB and leaving over 450 unused.

Virtual Web Hosting

Creating a website and maintaining it entails a lot of work and can prove to be impractical, time-consuming and costly for individuals and small and large scale companies. It is advisable to seek the help of service providers that specialize in all aspects of web hosting.

Aside from providing you a space in the server where you can store information in your web site and a steady Internet connection, most web hosting companies also provide additional services ranging from domain name registration and renewal to email hosting, data transfer, directory protection, backup services and technical support.

One of the hosting methods used by web hosting companies is virtual web hosting. This allows them to host a multitude of domains on one computer or server. Thus, if you decide to get a virtual web host, you are only renting a space in the huge server and sharing its features with many other domains.

Virtual web hosting, also known as "shared hosting," is the most affordable and efficient means of getting your web site a "home" on the web. For about $4 a month, you can use 300GB-space of a web server. Most servers have more than 2GB of Random Access Memory (RAM), so they are capable of hosting several domains—some are even capable of hosting as many as 250 domains.

There are basically two types of virtual web hosting: name-based and IP-based. In name-based virtual web hosting, only one IP address is used by various host names, while in IP-based virtual hosting, every web server that is configured with several virtual network interfaces on one physical interface, has its own IP address.

Like all other forms of web hosting, virtual web hosting has some disadvantages. One is you might experience problems encountered by other domains that share the server. Also, the simultaneous processes in the server may require you to have more technical know-how.
Tip! Support is really important when choosing a web hosting plan. You should check to see if the web host offers '24 hours a day / 7 days a week' support whether by phone, chat or email.

How to Choose the Best Web Hosting For You

Choosing a web host can be a tricky business - after all, there are lots of web hosts out there to choose from, and it's often hard to tell which is the best. When choosing one there a few key things you can look out for:

Disk space

Make sure that you get enough disk space for your needs. Most websites do not utilize as much disk space as you think. Most people when looking to buy web hosting they see the different packages that a certain host offers and always want to get the bigger one to ensure that they have enough disk space, bandwidth and features. The general rule of thumb is to get the middle package.

Bandwidth

Bandwidth can be trick business. First I will explain what bandwidth is. When someone loads one of your web pages it uses bandwidth. It is pretty easy for you to run out of bandwidth which is why most people recommend to get the middle package. Usually the middle package has enough bandwidth to ensure your website does not run out. If bandwidth runs out for that month people cannot view your website. So make you choose a package with sufficient bandwidth.

Server speed

When buying from a host make sure that they list their servers technical specifications on their website. If they do not that usually means that the servers are not top quality. You want a server that is up to date and has the latest in processing power, memory, hard drives and network connections. The faster the server the faster your website will be viewed in most cases.

Features -

Some key features you want to make sure you have are; FTP (File Transfer Protocol), Perl, PHP, CGI, SSL, MYSQL, Email such as POP3, subdomains and more.

Customer Service -

Make sure that the web host you are looking at has good customer support. How fast do they respond to emails? When they do respond is it helpful information or are you getting the run-around? If they respond in a timely manner with useful information, they are probably the right host for you!

Low Cost Web Hosting

If you are an individual who wants to show off your interests, special qualities, hobbies, e.t.c. to your friends or anybody outside; then it is the best idea to go for a low cost web hosting or even a free web hosting.

Even for small businesses, low cost web hosting would be the best option to get the maximum exposure for their company, their products and their services. As we all know web hosting is the must for any type of business whether it is small or big. But putting in huge amounts in web hosting for smaller or start up companies is not viable in the most cases and hence cheap web hosting is the great solution for this problem.

Also if it's your first website, a personal page or many other factors you may choose to go the lost cost web hosting route. In order to have a good website though, there are some things you need to be aware of and look for in a low cost web hosting provider. They are:

1. Storage:

Especially if you want images with your low cost web hosting solution, storage is important. Many low cost hosting services are free for the first 10mb and then start billing you in order to get more storage. Find a host that has at least 50mb of storage so that you don't risk running out. While 50 MB might not sound like a lot, many of the sites you visit each day likely aren't much larger then that in size. For starting out this is more then adequate space.

2. Advertisements

Being a low cost web hosting solution, the ISPs some how have to make money, so ads are expected. Lots of low cost web hosting solutions though go overboard with Popup and float-ins, as well as banner ads and plenty more. Try and find a low cost web hosting provider that has non obtrusive advertising. Generally the number of ads goes hand in d hand with just how low the price is. So a Dollar a month web hosting or free hosting you can expect a lot of ads.
Tip! Support is really important when choosing a web hosting plan. You should check to see if the web host offers '24 hours a day / 7 days a week' support whether by phone, chat or email.

In short, you need to find a safe low cost web hosting solution that provides you with plenty of storage and no over the top advertising. This way you are ensured to have pleasant experience having your site with low cost web hosting. Also don't forget it's not just your experience but those of your visitors as well, if you're limited to what you can have on your site, or there are hundreds of ads flying at your visitors screen, you'll have a hard time stopping them from clicking the back button.

How To Get Cheap Web Hosting Without Sacrificing Features

If you are going to have any kind of web presence you will need a web hosting company to host your site. It doesn't make any difference whether you are a large company doing business on the internet with shopping cars and thousands of products or just someone who wants to share their hobby with the world.

There are so many different web hosting companies out there that it can be a confusing process just trying to choose one, much less trying to find one that is affordable. Here are a few things to consider that will take some of the headache out of the process for you.

The first thing that must be determined is what type of website or websites you are going to feature. This will greatly influence your ultimate choice in web hosts. If you are only going to have a website of less than one hundred pages and you aren't going to be hosting videos and streaming audio you will find that a standard entry level web hosting package will probably do the trick for you. You can find these packages for under $10 per month and there are numerous companies that offer this type of service.

Another option to consider as a small company is shared web hosting. Again you can get this type of service for well under $10 per month and you can always upgrade as you grow. The thing to remember is not to sacrifice quality just to save a few bucks a year. There isn't a lot of difference in price to go with a web host that offers really good features as opposed to one that offers shoddy service.

One of the other issues that can be confusing for people is that of bandwidth. In a nutshell, this is the amount of data that your site is allowed to transfer through the web host's servers. If you are operating a business website do not skimp on this. Many web hosts have automatic shut downs enabled if your site goes over its monthly bandwidth allotment. It isn't as crucial if you are just running a personal or hobby type of site but if you are running a business a shut down website is the equivalent of locked doors at a brick and mortar business.
Tip! 24/7 live support. Phone support is the best option but it is a bonus to find a web hosting company that provides 24/7 live chat support along with phone support.

Although it is nearly impossible to determine a bandwidth amount in the beginning you can get a good idea to start with by figuring the number of web pages you have, their size in megabytes, and the number of hits you expect daily and multiply it to get an idea for the bandwidth usage you may have over a month. If you choose the right web hosting company they will let you upgrade if it looks like you are going to go over. Another key is to be sure that the company offers web stats that will allow you to check the traffic and hits that are coming to your site.

Did You Know That The Type Of Website You Have Could Decide Your Web Hosting Company?

The type of web site you have or intend to build will decide very much what web hosting company you end up choosing. The reason for this is that the level of storage, bandwidth, and other services differs greatly amongst all the various web hosting companies available.

If you are going to have a simple web site with only a few pages and very little graphics then you will be able to get by with a web host that offers entry level hosting packages. Bear in mind that even though there may be free services out there for a few dollars a month you are better off with your own hosting without their required advertising on your site.

Now on the other side of the coin, if you are going to have a web site that is more of an e-commerce or business web site or have one that hosts streaming music or video then you will want one that will allow much more features and scripts. The company will need to provide database support and offer applications such as ASP,PHP, and Java. It is also good for a web hosting company to have preinstalled scripts like those for forums or content management systems like Joomla or Wordpress. I personally like the web hosts who offer Cpanel with Fantastico just for the ease of use.

If you intend to collect payments on your website then you are going to want to be sure to have SSL with at least 128 bit encryption for secure online purchases. You may also want to go with a supported gateway for your online shopping cart so that credit cards can be processed in real time using the larger processing entities such as Verisign or Paypal.

If you have a website or blog that requires a database then you will absolutely need a web host that offers this with scripting such as SQL so that the web pages can be read to gain access to the particular database and display the content.

The amount of space you will need plays a huge part on determining the web host you ultimately choose and this is why web design is such a huge factor. As a general rule of thumb, the average web page will need less than 1MB so if you have a 100 page site then 100 MB of space will be more than sufficient. However, the more pictures, video, or audio you add into the equation the more disk space you will need.
Tip! Data Transfer is the monthly amount of outward-bound non-email traffic from your web site, that is allowed by a web hosting plan. Each time a visitor views one of your pages, all the files used to generate the page are calculated into your data transfer.

Do You Know How To Read The Signs Of A Bad Web Hosting Company?

With the proliferation of web hosting companies to choose from and even local operations springing up in spare bedrooms it is becoming increasingly difficult to discover the bad web hosts and separate them from the reputable ones.

One of the first signs of a bad web hosting company that should set off sirens and warning bells in your head is lack of support. This is the easiest and quickest way to tell, if the company isn't returning your phone calls or emails then it's simple, they are no good. This is typical of the type of web hosting companies we see springing up all over the internet that have no support staff and offer no customer support whatsoever. Be careful and stay away from the small fly by night web hosts. Cheap can be costly in other ways, I like to test them ahead of time by calling in to ask about features and see how long I have to wait on hold listening to elevator music or how many push button prompts I have to go through to get a real person.

Still another way to check out a web host is to look at their profit. If the web host you are looking at is traded publicly take a look at their profit reports, if they are then you're in good shape, if not you probably want to look elsewhere. If you are looking at a private hosting company take a look at the prices they are charging, are they the cheapest or are they in the middle? It is best to choose someone in the middle as those offering the cheapest are either cutting features, have no support, or are simply not making enough money to be able to remain a viable business.

Another easy to see issue is constant price changes. If the web hosting company is constantly adjusting prices it indicates they don't know what they are doing or they are starving from charging to little to begin with and are now having to make adjustments.

For hobby sites or web sites that really don't matter much it may not hurt you tremendously to have a bad experience with a web host, but if you are like many of us on the internet and are actually trying to earn a living, a bad web host can destroy your business overnight. Keep close tabs on the web hosting company you choose until they have proven themselves to be trustworthy.
Tip! Data Transfer is the monthly amount of outward-bound non-email traffic from your web site, that is allowed by a web hosting plan. Each time a visitor views one of your pages, all the files used to generate the page are calculated into your data transfer.

How To Easily Choose The Right Web Hosting For Your Business?

If you have had made the decision to get online and are looking for business web hosting to get your regular brick and mortar business on the internet, congratulations, it's about time! Seriously, if you don't have a web presence for your business on the internet you are missing out on a lot of business and much of it is free!

With the proliferation of business web hosting companies available to choose from it can be a confusing process to sort through them all but if you just take it a step at a time and first identify the web hosting needs for your business it will be easier. You need to ask yourself questions such as, "Do I need a dedicated server or can I get by with a shared server?" Unless you do a large volume of business on the internet chances are you don't need a dedicated server, which can cost you anywhere from $150 to $500 a month. Most businesses can get by with just a regular shared server or virtual server and have web hosting expenses under $30 a month. The price will vary from around $10 a month to as much as $50 depending on how much bandwidth and disk space you need.

If all you are doing is basically putting up an informational site or a blog about your business you will not require much space and probably not a shopping cart although I cannot imagine putting a business website up without one.

Don't deal with any fly by night web hosting companies that are running their hosting out of their bedroom. You want to be able to get 24/7 support in case you have any problems and you want to be sure that they have minimal or nonexistent down time. Remember that if their servers are down so is your business website. Make sure they have a money back guarantee, all of the reputable web hosting providers do. The company should also make it very easy for you to upgrade or downgrade your services and most will offer you a discount if you pay annually or quarterly instead of monthly. This can make a large difference in your annual web hosting expenses so definitely check into it.
Tip! Windows and Linux hosting at comparable prices. Some hosting companies will offer both Linux and Windows web hosting but some will charge much more for one or the other.

The choice of a business web hosting company is not one to be taken lightly. As we move more and more into the progression of total internet business that is sure to come it will become even more crucial to have the right web hosting, it can very well be a life or death decision for your business.

Don't Let Bad E-Commerce Web Hosting Cost You Business

A reliable web hosting company is crucial especially if you operate a business on the internet offering products for sale the require you to have e-commerce web hosting with shopping carts. Unless you have some mega store it is unlikely that you will need your own servers which could cost you several hundred dollars a month, but you do need e-commerce that is reliable and trustworthy that has a good reputation for uptime. When you are running an online business servers being down is the equivalent of having the doors locked in a brick and mortar business.

One of the great things about web hosting is that you have a myriad of choices ranging from low end shared hosting for less than $10 per month to having high end dedicated servers than run well over $300 per month. Whichever one you choose I still recommend you have someone else do the management of the servers for you unless you are a techno geek.

There are many web hosting companies that offer services with specific e-commerce hosting packages built just for small businesses. Knowing what company to choose is a more difficult decision than trying to find one, not just because of the number of choices of web hosting companies available but because the particular e-commerce web hosting needs vary between different companies. As I mentioned before, it is imperative that you take this aspect of putting your business online very seriously as it can make the difference in success or failure.

One of the key issues that you need to be concerned with when you are looking at e-commerce web hosting packages for your business is how much bandwidth you are allowed. Not having enough bandwidth can hurt your business tremendously especially if you get a good deal of traffic or you sell items that have large downloads as well. The bandwidth is shared by all who are on your server and all the visitors who are on it at any given time so don't cut yourself short..

Another key issue to look for in e-commerce web hosting is a web hosting company with the fewest "hops" from the internet backbone, hops are basically each server or router that are between the user and the internet backbone, the best of course would be a hosting company that feeds directly from the internet backbone. You should also try to choose a company that has the latest state of the art web server hardware with the most up to date multiple processor servers to avoid any problems.

As mentioned previously reliability is a must as well as redundancy which means they should have more than one backbone provider in case something goes wrong. If you plan on having an online store or large catalogue disk space will definitely be an issue that you will want to address as well. The e-commerce web hosting company you choose should also provide the best security for the online transactions that you will be accepting which at this time is called SSL.
Tip! Data Transfer is the monthly amount of outward-bound non-email traffic from your web site, that is allowed by a web hosting plan. Each time a visitor views one of your pages, all the files used to generate the page are calculated into your data transfer.

These are the basic e-commerce web hosting features you should have, you may require upgrades such as back end data integration or recurring payment options but those are things you can discuss with the host you choose.

Web server hosting is a web hosting solution committed to providing you with the advanced changes in technology. It gives your online business exposure on the worldwide web in order to reach your target market. This makes you more competitive, and helps you keep up with the fast-paced online technology.

Before you choose a web server-hosting package, you must first know your specific needs such as the amount of traffic per month, size of disk space, number of needed email addresses and price. After determining your needs, you can start your search for a server hosting company with a web server hosting service that features 24/7 live support, a 30-day money-back guarantee, Windows and Linux hosting, shared SSL and free setup.

When looking for a web server hosting company, you can begin your search by going online. You can also rely on word of mouth. Sometimes, colleagues can recommend a company. Online and printed advertisements can also help you in your search.

With stiff competition in the online industry, it is necessary that you rely on web server hosting solutions to better give you an online presence. This way, your competitors will not leave you behind the scene.

Your Guide to Web Hosting

Web hosting is the method of putting a website on the Internet with the use of a server. Once a website has been placed on a server, people from all over the world who have access in the Internet will be able to view and visit the website anytime they want.

Why is web hosting important? Web hosting is needed if a company or an individual would like to become visible on the Internet. Web hosting is like renting a small lot or a certain property. An individual will rent a place in the server to allow his website to be viewed and accessed by everyone on the Internet.

A web hosting service is needed by those people who have their own websites and e-commerce pages but do not have their own servers to accommodate the web pages. However, one challenge that may be encountered is choosing the right web host since there are millions of web host services in the Internet today.

What are the requirements needed in web hosting? Three things need to be considered. They are the website, the domain name and an account from a web hosting company or a server. All these three should be present before one is able to avail of a web hosting service.

Many factors should be considered before one should decide on a web host company. The person or the company needs to make sure that the web hosting service is the right service for them. It is important to think first before deciding since it would be very difficult to move out of a web hosting service once a contract has been made.

The person or the company needs to identify what services and features are needed for the website. Web hosting packages offer different features and some may not be appropriate for a specific website. The company or the individual person may only be paying for a feature that will not be utilized.

In choosing a web host, the bandwidth should also be considered. A small site does not encounter much traffic. Therefore a 10 to 100 Megabyte of disk space and a 1 to 10 Gigabyte of data transfer every month would be enough to satisfy the needs of the website. One thing to consider is whether the web site will be using sound and movie files or text files. Sound and movie files consume larger spaces. If the website will only be used for text files, then the space will not be much of a problem.

It is also important to consider the primary purpose of the website whether it will be used for personal purposes or for something that would require developing ones skills on web designing. If the web page will only be used for personal matters, a smaller space would only be required and some may even find web hosts free of charge. If the web page will be used to display skills in web development, therefore the features and the space allotment should be considered.

The Effects of a "Gated Internet" on Small Business - The Web Hosting Industry

Imagine this: You have a killer idea for a new online business. You spend months developing your web site, you make it SEO (Search engine optimization) friendly, you sign up for web hosting, and you start about the rigorous task of promoting your new small business venture, but no one in your target market comes. You soon discover that many internet service providers are forbidding their customers from viewing your site), so your new internet venture and months of hard work, is now effectively "dead in the water".

The above scenario is not a reality yet, but could become many business owners, and small web hosting company's worst nightmare. The stage was set last year when various phone and cable companies successfully reversed the FCC regulation requiring network owner's to provide nondiscriminatory communications services, and rates.

How does this affect the web hosting industry? If internet service providers (ISP's) are not required by law to be neutral, in the content they provide the American public, it would allow them to block sites they don't have a partnership with, or impose a surcharge for viewing a competing company's web site. For the hosting industry, this would mean a drastic slow down in the creation of new entrepreneurial, and personal web sites, which would in-turn mean a smaller customer base, and lost profits.

The reality of a corporation controlled internet has hit home for many Skype voice over IP (VOIP) users. Prodigy Communications LP has closed the consumer internet ports that Skype and other VOIP services use in an effort to curve bandwidth usage. The blocking of VOIP services is small scale example of the FCC's internet deregulation. If the Net Neutrality law is not passed the general public, small business owners, and hosting providers could see a radical change in the content they send and receive to internet users.
Tip! Cost is very important. You want to find a web hosting plan that fits into your budget and not sacrifice your disk space and data transfer.

In the 21st century internet web hosting, has exploded and has sparked a new wave of entrepreneurial success for many small business owners. Net Neutrality prevents companies like AT&T, Verizon, and Comcast from deciding which websites will work, based on who they are affiliated with. If something is not done, web hosting providers, and developers, will have a harder time getting their content online and making their mark on their targeted audience.

Web Hosting and Domain Name Registrar Feedback

You see, many hosts will advertise all kinds of deals that look great if you only look at the features they flash in front of you and you don't read their fine print. For example, a host might offer a terabyte of transfer, bandwidth, or disk space but in their fine print they have a clause that allows them to simply turn your website off if you exceed their cpu limits. These limits that you will find in their small print is what really matters. And, I'm not suggesting that you read the fine print of 10 or 20 websites everytime you want to change your host, but it would be nice if there was a trusted website that you could go to read feedback from other clients of this host to know whether or not they have the goods that you are after.

Registrars have similar difficulties and problems that can make your life harder or easier. Some will make it cumbersome to transfer or change your whois details, but others are known for making this a snap and cater to those who buy and sell and change whois details often. The last thing you want when trying to sell a domain name is to have to fax your registrar all your details and then wait a few weeks for them to respond to you.

So, the website idea that naturally lends itself too is a feedback based forum where users can rate and review their web host and registrar. Incentives might need to be offered to keep others honest and open about their opinions, but this will only be needed to get things going at first. After you have established a community of a significant amount of members, things will get rolling and then you can throw up some advertisements and you're golden. Don't get me wrong, this might not be an easy website idea for the novice webmaster, but if you're ready for a challenge and willing to put the effort into this, you can establish yourself as a respected leader in this area of web development.

Ecommerce Web Hosting Packages

E-commerce websites have different requirements than a personal website or standard product or business information site. On e-commerce sites you need the capability to display your products for online sales, as well as a few customized features. That is why companies offer separate e-commerce web hosting packages.

Let's say you have a selection of products you would like to sell over the Internet. Your website will need to display the product and a description. Users will need to be able to select the product to add to their shopping cart. Your site will need a way to store customer information and accept credit cards. Specialized e-commerce web hosting packages will make all these tasks simpler and easier to manage.

Prices between the different e-commerce hosting companies can vary, as can their services and features. Take a while to shop around and research the different options. Try to locate current customers who are willing to answer your questions. You can probably find them on business forums or web development forums. Most people are generally willing to help out and answer some questions.

You may also need to find an e-commerce web hosting package that will also include the design. Getting the two tasks finished at once can save you a lot of time and money. You may also want a company to manage your new web site. That is where research is essential. It may be more cost effective to have one web hosting company perform all these tasks, but you may not be paying for the best quality.

So, in order to get the most out of your online presence, you may need to consider different e-commerce web hosting packages to find one that best fits your needs and budget. Prices, fees and services vary from one company to the other but the research will be well worth it.

Web Hosting Ecommerce Merchant Accounts

Ecommerce is doing business online, the buying and selling of services and products over the web. It allows you to promote your goods or services, advertise promos, and tap into your sales targets in an easier way. Your clients will make their orders by browsing on your web site and send their payments through your merchant account, which in turn, transfers these payments to your bank account.

Thus, a permanent connection of your web site to the Internet is a basic requirement. This is what web hosting merchant accounts offer. They provide this complete and continuous link by allowing your site to occupy a space on their own web server, where all the information about your site is stored. Being connected to this server will enable you to acquire the all-time web accessibility, for it stays on for 24 hours a day and 7 days a week.

These web hosting merchant accounts will save you the cost of owning and maintaining the needed server. You just have to pay for their service. In looking for a web host, you need to consider their reliability and reputation history, the disk or storage space of their web server, and its capability of accommodating simultaneous access to your web site. Make sure there is a database server and scripting software, operating and web content management systems, and web interface.

And most significantly, make sure your web host offers payment processing capabilities such as SSL or Secure Sockets Layer, a communications protocol that provides security. This is very important since there are sensitive information, such as credit card numbers, that need to be encrypted to ensure that the information passes securely between you and your client, so as to prevent opportunity for fraud.

A web hosting ecommerce merchant account offers you the ability to accept all modes of payment in a faster, safer and more accessible means. It ensures you that all your payment transactions can be continuously processed anytime, may it be day or night, and that no piece of information in the communication and payment transaction process will be missed since your web site is online all the time.

Customer Excellence Returns to Web Site Hosting!

For those of you with Web sites, you probably know what a "host" is. It's a company that provides a location, or address, on the Internet where your Web site resides.

In other words, just like a physical business needs an address, so does a Web site. You can't have a Web site and just "stick it up" on the Web. Unless you want to set up your own server, you have to go through a hosting company who gives you that address, including server space and bandwidth, that enables the search engines and visitors to find your site.

Let's look at some common problems we often have with hosting companies:

* You can never find an actual person to talk to! They may have a 24-hour customer service line open, but you can never get through to a real person.

* Hosting companies often think that the "lowest price" will always get the sale, but they fail to realize that what people really want is excellent customer service, servers that are up almost 100% of the time, and a variety of services that come with the hosting package.

* Many hosting companies don't provide any other functionality other than Web site hosting. They don't provide a "control panel" full of goodies such as PGP secure e-mail, shopping carts, log analysis, database creation, etc.

* Guess what? Technical support people often don't make the best "customer support" people. They may be technical gurus, but their main interest lies in their high tech servers and other functionality, rather than solving the simple problems of their customers.

In other words, weak customer service is a major problem with the majority of hosting companies these days. Solution:
Tip! 24/7 live support. Phone support is the best option but it is a bonus to find a web hosting company that provides 24/7 live chat support along with phone support.

I recently had the pleasure of being introduced to Combustion Hosting Company, and to say I was impressed is a vast understatement.

Here are some things that struck me as unbelievable. When the phone rings, whoever answers the phone is required to stand up to answer it and talk. After all, the sheer act of standing up requires that they're alert and are listening to your problems and concerns. And, you actually speak to a "real" person!

With Combustion, if you have a problem, they don't just "tell" you how to solve it, they solve it for you! Also, their services certainly aren't limited to "hosting." They can set you up with an account to where you can access the Internet through local access numbers no matter where you travel.

Their prices are extremely reasonable -- much better than I had been paying previously. Plus, the "extras" I've received by going with Combustion are amazing.
Tip! Support is really important when choosing a web hosting plan. You should check to see if the web host offers '24 hours a day / 7 days a week' support whether by phone, chat or email.

But the one thing that makes Combustion shine over most Web hosting companies is their devotion to providing good customer service, and this is an area in which they truly excel.

So, if you're in the market for a new Web site, or if you aren't pleased with your current host, consider Combustion Hosting. It will be one of the smartest moves you could ever make for your Web site. http://www.combustionhosting.com/moreinfo

Web Site Hosting : From Domain Registration to Getting It Online

The first thing you need to do when setting up a web site is to register a domain name. A domain is the familiar "something.com" (the www is not part of the domain name).

Your domain name is a pointer to the actual IP address of your website. They're used because they're a lot easier for people to remember than a bunch of numbers would be.

Every website has an IP address, which is a number like 123.456.78.9. The domain name system (aka DNS) translates between those numbered addresses and the corresponding domain names.

Each domain on the internet is registered with a central registry handled by a group called InterNIC which is a subsidiary of ICANN - the organization that certifies all domain name registrars.

Domains names gets filtered through DNS servers, which link the address with the correct domain name. Most websites have a primary and a secondary DNS server - essentially a backup system that increases reliability.

Getting Your Website Set Up

The first step in registering your domain name is to decide what you want it to be. The domain can be almost anything you want it to be, but it will be more effective if it relates to the subject of your website.

If you're selling shoes, for example, it helps to have a domain name that's related to shoes - all-shoes.com for instance.

There are a few simple rules for registering domain names. The only characters you can use in your domain are letters, numbers and the hyphen. Domain names can't be longer than 70 characters, but it's best to keep them as short as possible.

They can be either upper or lower case - the case of the domain name is ignored by DNS. It sometimes helps to use a combination to make them easier to read. For example, which is easier to read mywebsite.com or MyWebSite.com? Both are the same as far as DNS servers are concerned.

There are a number of extensions available to use with your domain. The most common by far is .com. It has become synonymous with the internet (eg. "The dot com crash").

Other common extensions include .net and .org. Some of the newer ones are .info, .biz and .name - these aren't as common however, and they won't be as effective as .com, .net or .org, which people are more familiar with.
Tip! Disk Space/Storage refers to the amount of space given by a web hosting plan for your web site's pages, images, and any additional files. Take this into consideration when determining the total number of files you will be using for your website and their sizes.

There are also specialized extensions such as .museum, .aero and .coop which are only available for members of certain organizations.

What About Country-Specific Domains?

You can also register domains with specific country extensions such as .us (United States) or .de (Germany). The rules for registering country-specific domains vary from country to country, so you need to check with the registrars for a given country to see if you are able to register them.

All domain registrars must be certified by ICANN (the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers). There are many registrars with varying prices. You can get a full list of all certified registrars at the InterNIC website (www.internic.net/regist.html).

Even though registrars are regulated, they're allowed to offer their registration service through third parties, so most web hosts offer domain registration even if they aren't registrars themselves.
Tip! 24/7 live support. Phone support is the best option but it is a bonus to find a web hosting company that provides 24/7 live chat support along with phone support.

Domains are registered for at least one year and you can buy as many as ten years when registering. A longer registration contract usually nets you a lower price, so if you know you'll be using that domain for some time to come it can pay to pay for a longer period.

Web Hosting Affiliate Programs - The No Brainer!

Web hosting affiliate programs give webmasters the opportunity to earn commission by referring their website visitors to a web hosting company site. When a person signs up for a web hosting package and has been referred by an affiliate, commissions are usually paid in a lump sum ranging from $30-$60.

This provides a great opportunity for webmasters with community and web development driven sites to make extra revenue. As the general public becomes more and more internet savvy, an increasing number of people are putting their first websites online.

The truth is;

The web hosting industry doesn't have a definitive industry leader.

There are a huge number of quality web hosting companies available, and most of them want to pay you to send people to them. By simply placing a small link or banner on your website and informing your site visitors of a web hosting company you recommend, I think you might be surprised at the amount of people who will click-through and check it out.

Do your homework though.

Make sure you select a web hosting company that is reputable. Check to see if your web hosting company has an affiliate program. This way, you are speaking from experience, and you tend to provide an even more compelling reason for your visitors to choose web hosting from you.

If you are very lucky, you might find "the hidden gem"; the best kind of web hosting affiliate program. These are the programs that pay a residual commission, so you continue to earn money every month for as long as your referred client remains with that particular web hosting company. The companies that run these types of programs pay you a percentage of the web hosting costs on an on-going basis, which can add up to be substantially more than the single payment.

Making a recommendation for a web hosting provider not only provides an extra resource for your website visitors, but can earn your some very generous commissions. You have got nothing to loose from trying.

Avoiding the Web Hosting Scam

As the World Wide Web grows ever larger so, it seems, does the proliferation of web hosting companies. They offer more and more facilities at cheaper and cheaper pricing. Of course there are reputable web companies that offer affordable web hosting plans - they have to compete in the market place after all. But, ever heard the saying "If it sounds too good to be true, it usually is" well, this is just as true with web hosting companies as it is with everything else.

There are certain limitations that all web hosting companies face regarding web server resources and specifications. There is no such thing as a web server that has a limitless supply of RAM and CPU. We have all seen web hosting companies claiming to provide unlimited space or bandwidth for your website. But it is a fact that, unless you have a large business website, the average web site uses 50 Megs or less of space and usually less then 1 gig of bandwidth per month.

So, why would a hosting company offer unlimited bandwidth and space per month? Simple,…….they don't tell all the truth! They often make up unrealistic plans with huge amounts of space and bandwidth for around $5.95 a month. They play the percentages game. What I mean by that is, that they know, maybe one or two of every 100 websites that they host on these plans are going to use all the bandwidth that they claim to provide. How do they deal with these higher bandwidth sites? They usually close the accounts of these websites saying, "your site is using too many resources." They are of course telling the truth about the resource usage. It is important to realize that bandwidth, and the space a website is using, have nothing to do with the server resources being used. Resource usage has to do with the amount of CPU and RAM a site uses. If your site is using a lot of bandwidth you aren't penalized for using the bandwidth on your web hosting plan, your site is kicked off the server for likely using most of the web hosting companies servers cpu and ram. Also it is possible that the cheaper the web hosting plan offered, and the more bandwidth and space provided - the more sites per server the host will cram in to make their profit back. Which also means poorer performance for your website.
Tip! There are certain limitations that all web hosting companies face regarding web server resources and specifications. There is no such thing as a web server that has a limitless supply of RAM and CPU.

Another thing to bear in mind is that a lot of these "too good to be true" plans want you to pay for a year up front. You would think that a hosting company couldn't care less if you pay monthly or yearly for your hosting. Because, if you're happy with your hosting, you're likely to keep your hosting plan going as long as you own the website - certainly longer than a year! It doesn't cost that much to process those monthly fees, so why pay yearly? Well, could be that their support sucks, their servers are slow, slow, slow, possibly your site downtime is also going to become an issue. Obviously If you pay on a monthly basis you're going to move your site in double-quick fashion. If you paid for a year up front, it's going to be a painful and frustrating 12 months for you and your customers!

One other red flag to be aware of, with cheap web hosting companies, are the claims of zero downtime. It is impossible to guarantee 100% uptime, as it is necessary to reboot all servers occasionally for updates to software and to maintain security. No updates to security means an easy target for hackers and the like, who trawl the web constantly looking for holes to exploit. You don't want your valuable customer info to fall prey to security flaws at the server level.
Tip! Types of Web Hosting • Email Hosting – These are targeting businesses who want their email saved to a different server than their web site, so if the site goes down, they can still access email. • Image Hosting – Image hosting has become more popular over the last few years.

So, now you are better armed to go out into the web hosting company jungle. As I said at the beginning, there are many web hosting companies out there that provide stellar service at a reasonable price. Follow a few of the guidelines touched on above, and you should have a relatively problem free start to your life on-line, ignore them at your peril!

Is a Niche Web Hosting Service for You?

Aside from the big name web hosting providers, there are many smaller, niche-oriented web hosting companies. Could these be a better deal, or provide better service for your highly targeted site than a general web host? First it's important to understand what a niche web host is.

Definition of a Niche Web Host A niche web hosting service is targeted to a very small and distinct group of customers (called a niche). Services are modeled around the basic needs of members of that target customer group, and niche web hosts can range from offering hosting services only for certain types of web hosting, or for a certain type of site.

Types of Web Hosting • Email Hosting - These are targeting businesses who want their email saved to a different server than their web site, so if the site goes down, they can still access email. • Image Hosting - Image hosting has become more popular over the last few years. It is targeted towards individuals who simply want space to host and display image files without the need for a full web site, or as a supplement for a full web site. • Reseller Hosting - Only reseller accounts are sold. You can't buy web hosting from them for your own personal use. • Audio / Podcast hosting - Audio hosting sites are nothing new, but they've usually been targeted towards musicians, allowing them to display their work, and oftentimes giving them a one- or even multi-page site to include images and information about themselves as well. Now, with podcasting becoming more popular, some sites allow you to upload your podcasts and make them available for public download. • Genre Sites - These are hosting companies that target their services to certain types of web site owners, such as musicians, artists, photographers, web designers, authors, etc. They provide tools, and sometimes web site templates, that are specifically designed to be of use to their target market.

The Cost of Niche Web Hosting While you may think many niche web hosts would provide their services at discounted rates, since they're often offering fewer services (such as just image or email hosting), that's not necessarily the case. While you may only pay $2 - 3 for email or image hosting monthly, you can now find some of the larger, full-service, web hosting companies offering their services for those rates.

Due to the fact that niche web hosts are targeting smaller customer groups, they actually tend to charge more than their general web host competitors. This is because they don't have the luxury of selling space in bulk to huge groups of general customers. They also sometimes charge increased fees, because they provide specialty tools or templates for their target customers that the general hosts to not.

Is it for You? While a general web host can provide most, if not all, of the services you need, it's more a matter of preference than anything else. The exception would be if you find a niche web host that is providing specialty tools that you'd like to use in your site or other hosted services. Niche hosting for limited services, such as email or images, can be a good value. That's especially true if your current general web host limits the number of email accounts you can set up or the space available for images. Consider the benefits a niche host will provide in relation to the cost that you would be charged. If they offer something special that you consider worth the price, then niche hosting might just be for you.

A Java Developer's Guide to Web Hosting

You make a living writing enterprise java applications, and you would like to work on your own projects for fun or profit, you would like to create your own web site or you would like to have a place to host your open source project. You look around for hosting providers, and all you see is PHP and PERL support, with very few hosting companies supporting Java, what to do?

Although the number of hosting companies supporting Java is increasing, support varies from nearly non-existent to companies that are deeply committed to their Java support.

There are three types of hosting plans available:

* Shared hosting

* Virtual Private Server hosting

* Dedicated Server hosting

With a shared hosting plans, several web sites are hosted on the same server, sharing the server's resources and using the same IP address. Virtual Private Server (VPS) plans consist of a server that is split into multiple virtual servers, each virtual server has it's own IP address, some companies call these types of plans Virtual Dedicated Servers. Dedicated servers are the most expensive type of plan, each dedicated server customer gets their own physical server, nice to have, but prohibitively expensive for personal web sites and small operations.

At Ensode.net, we recommend that you find a hosting company that provides Virtual Private Server (VPS) support (some hosting companies call it Virtual Dedicated Server), since they provide a nice balance between price and control. A VPS server is like having your own server, usually with root access, which gives you the freedom to install any application you might need, including version control systems like Subversion or CVS, WebDAV, or anything else you might need. With a VPS plan you will most likely get your own IP address, and your server will be not only your web server, but also your mail and database server.

VPS hosting plans tend to be somewhat more expensive than shared hosting plans, but it is our belief that they are worth the extra cost since they provide much more control and flexibility. If you are a Java developer, chances are you are used to "getting your hands dirty", and working on a server using good old Unix commands. Shared hosting plans tend to have "user friendly" (dumbed down?) interfaces, which might simplify administration, but can also severely limit what you are able to do, for example, let's say a shared hosting company gives you 300 megabytes of disk space to host your web site, and an additional 300 megabytes for your email, if your web site takes 5 megabytes of space, but your email server is getting full, there is no way to allocate more space to store emails and reduce the allocation of web space. In addition to leaving you unable to reallocate resources as needed, you can also forget about installing any applications on your server. Another disadvantage of shared hosting plans is that an IP address is shared among several customers, which could have potential problems. For example, if one of the customers uses their mail server for bulk emailing, the IP address of that mail server may be banned from several systems, in a shared hosting plan environment, this would affect all the customers using the same server.
Tip! There are certain limitations that all web hosting companies face regarding web server resources and specifications. There is no such thing as a web server that has a limitless supply of RAM and CPU.

With few exceptions, shared hosting plans that support Java do so through a shared JVM, which means that you have no way of starting or stopping the JVM, and the same JVM is used to run the Java applications of all the hosting company's clients on the server. With a VPS plan, since you have access to your own (virtual) server, it is a given that you get full control over the JVM.

You can use your favorite search engine to find companies that offer VPS plans. Good luck and may your site become immensely popular.
